New Abbey of Orval (in Villers-devant-Orval) VILLERS-DEVANT-ORVAL in FLORENVILLE / BELGIUM description:

In 1926, the family de Harenne gives back the ruins of Orval and the grounds around it to the Order of Cîteaux, with the aim to see a new monastry grow there.

Dom Jean-Baptiste Chautard, abbot of Sept-Fons (in the French department Allier), took the responsibility for the new order. He sent a group of monks to orval, to start a new group. Dom Marie-Albert van der Cruyssen, monk in La Trappe, puts his shoulders under this task. By 1936, Orval again was an independent abbey, and in 1948 the buildings were finished.

The contemporary abbey was built in new romanesque style, under supervision of Henry Vaes.

Like in the past, the abbey is active economically. Of this, the nice and well known Orval abbey beer and cheese at witness.
