Maison du Bailli GEMBLOUX / BELGIUM: Maison du Bailli GEMBLOUX / BELGIUM:

Maison du Bailli GEMBLOUX / BELGIUM description:

Since 1951 the town was the owner of thiscastle, that is also in use as town hall. It used to be property of the abbaye.

It is in fact constructed near the old townwall, and was probably of some importance for the defence of the town. In the parc you can still find the southtower.

The actual building was built in 1589. Underneath it you can find the cellars from the 12th and 13th century. In 1937 was enlarged eastwards. But even during the 18th and 19th century there were several adaptations.

The name 'Maison du Bailli',refers to the fact that the home of the bailli (baljuw) was the property of the town. He was nominated by the abbot and sir of Gembloux. But it seemes that he didn't live there.
