The probable origin of this church goes back to the 15 th century, when there was here a chapel for the Holy Mary.

The chapel was promoted in 1732 to a parish church and was enlarged into a church with one nave. In 1883-1884 there was a new enlargment under the orders of the architect Van Assche.

According Joris Verhaegen Opdorp is the geographical centre of Flanders.
