Old Canon NIEUWPOORT / BELGIUM:

Old Canon NIEUWPOORT / BELGIUM description:

This cast iron canon is of the type which was loaded from the front.

Probably it was made at the beginning of the 19th century. All decorations rusted away, so we cannot know who made it. It's said to have been used to defend the harbor of the city Nieuwpoort. It was probably made in Luik, although the Belgian state bought similar canons in 1835 in Scotland (and it might also be one of those canons).

The car on which it is mounted would be a copy of the ones used to defend the coast.

J.Smit contradicts this (translated by us): 'The basis is not correctly made for use on land. Instead, this is a typical construction for usage on a boat'. This fits my thoughts.
