City Walls Sozopol / Bulgaria description:

Sozopol is one of the eldest cities around the Black Sea. There are traces from 7000 years of history.

In the 5th century BC there were massive city walls to protect the city. In 610 BC the area had become a city-state called Apolloniya, housing a 13 m heigh statue of the god Apollo. In 72 BC the city fell in the hands of the Romans led by Marcus Lucullus. The city was plundered and the statue was taken to Rome.

In the 5th century AC new city walls were built, of which now we see the remains.
