altar stone(000658)

In some churches you will find in the wooden altar an altar stone (mostly about 30 cm by 30 cm) built in, which holds the relics of a saint or martyr. An altar was used to make offerings to the gods and this normally involved blood. That is the reason why they preferred stone to wood. When wood had to be used, an altar stone was placed.
