Pasants Tower ANTWERP 1 in ANTWERP / BELGIUM description:The 'Farmer tower'(now KBC tower) is 97,75 metres heigh and was the first sky scraper in Europe and was built in Art Deco style . This tower building (in use as office building for the KBC bank) was built in 1929-1932. Architect was Jan Van Hoenacker.
The name 'Boerentoren' (Tower of the Farmers) comes from the fact that during the first half of the 20th century, farmers were the most important customers of the KB bank.
On one of the pictures, you see a red A on top of the building. This was put there to indicate the Year of the Fashion (2002). In the meantime, it was taken off again. At the moment it was taken off, quite some people were protesting.
