Saint-Peter's church BERTEM / BELGIUM description:

This three-aisled church without transept is one of the best preserved of the norman chruches of Flanders and is a fine example of the Maas-romanesque buildingstyle.

Construction started at the end of the 10th century. The church was built with local white sandstone.

The massive western tower is crowned with a pyramidal roof. The porch in the western tower dates from the 17th century. The nave with small windows with round arches is 6 spans long. This is exeptional as mostly there are only 5 travées. The choir at the east side has a semi-circular apse.
