Biron Castle Biron / FRANCE description:The history of this castle goes back to the 12th century. Special is that
between the 12th till the beginning of the 20th century, it was always in the hands of
the same family: de Gontaut-Biron. This was one of the 4 baronies in the Perigord (this
was the Purple Perigord).
Nevertheless, several time the castle was invaded by ennemies, fe in 1211 by the
Albigenses (Cathares) and shortly afterwards by Simon de Montfort (1214) (who expelled
the Cathares). Later also the 100 year war did a lot of dammage.
Due to the fact that during the centuries, a lot of changes were done, the castle is an
interesting mixture of different styles.
The eldest part is the 12th century donjon.
By the end of the 15th century, major changes were done in a style which is a mix of
Late Gothic and Renaissance.
The loggia with double pillars was added
in the 18th century.
