The castle of Rocamadour was rebuilt in neogothic style during the 19th century on the ruins of the Medieval castle from the end of the 13th and the beginning of the 14th century. This castle was meant to avoid that robbers... would be able to use ropes and climb down to the holy places in the rock.

However, this was not enough, and during the Religion Wars and the French Revolution, a lot of damage was done.
