Monbazillac Castle Monbazillac / FRANCE description:In it's current shape, the Monbazillac castle dates from the middle of the 16th century. Around 1550, it was built by the d' Aydie family (rather changed though - as the corner towers are elder). It's a mixture of Middle Age and Renaissance elements.
It's on a hill - or rather on the upper edge of the valley of the Dordognem giving greqt views on the valley and the city of Bergerac.
The castle gives a rather compact impression, with on each edge a strong turret, dating from the 15th century. The walls are topped by an inner walk (horzintally around the entire castle), above which there are red roofs.
Looking at the central entrance, you see the building is not symmetrical: the entrance is in the right half.
The interior houses a sallon with an impressive renaissancechimneyhood, and an interesting collection of thth century tapistry from Flanders. On the first floor, there is a duchess room in Louis XII style.
Since 1962, the castle houses the cooperative wine cave of Monbazillac. They mainly do the famous sweet white dessertwine.... Of course, the caves can be vistited as well.
