Dancing House - Ginger and Fred - Tancici Dum Pragues in PRAGUES / Czech Republic description:The plans for this 'dancing house' were drawn by the architects Frank Gehry and Vlado Milunic.
This house was built to replace a neorenaissance house dating from the end of the 19th century, that was badly damaged in 1945 and torn down in 1960.
Vaclav Havel, former Czech president, was co-owner of a neighboring house. He asked architect Vlado Milunic (who was involved in te reconstruction of Havel's appartment in the neighboring house) for help. The Dutch bank ING acepted to build a modern building. Milunic first asked the famous architect Jean Nouvel, but he refused because he foudn the surface (491 m2) too small. In the end, the architect Frank Gehry was asked.
This buidling is an (in our eyes very successfull and beautiful) exemple for modern 'deconstructivist' architecture, with unusual shapes. The building represents a dancing couple (being Ginger Rogers and Fred Astair - giving the original name 'Ginger and Fred'). Is was made of 99 concrete pannels, each with it's own shape...
