Cagsawa Church Tower Ruins Daraga / Philippines description:The Franciscans built this Baroque church in the small village Cagsawa on the foot of the Mayon volcano in the first half of the 18th century, as a replacement for a church built in 1636 but ruined by Dutch Pirates.
On February 1th 1814 the church was destroyed by a vicious eruption of the Mount Mayon Volcano, leaving only ruins. Overall, this eruption killed about 1200 people. Within the village of Cagsawa, many people fled inot the church, where they were sufficated.
Part of the walls also survived, and collapsed around 1950.
