Saint-Sophia's church / Old Bishopric Nessebar / Bulgaria description:

At the end of the 5th century, on this place in the centre of old Nessebar a church was built. The Byzantine ruins we see now got thier shape in the 9th century. Then a three-aisled church with a round choirapse and a narthex was built.

During the Middle Ages this was the cathedral of Nessebar. In 1257, it was plundered by the Venitians during their campaign against the Bulgare Empire and the relics disappeared to San Salvatore in Venice. During the 18th century the basilica was abandonned.

This Saint-Sophia's church is along with the old Nessebar city center part of the Unesco World Inheritage.
