Our Ladies' Basilique d'Avoith Avioth / FRANCE description:This Gothic basilica dates from the 14th or the second
half of the 13th century. But the history goes back further... Bernard de Clarivaux
would have been here, and already in the 12th century this was a pilgrimage area.
On the square close to the church there is some kind of
reception arbour. It's an example of High Gothic
style. The idea was the the pilgrims went there to give their offers to Our Lady
- which became 'Our Lady of the Reception' or 'Recevresse' as the building is called.
The church building is clearly Gothic, with its pointed
arches, flying buttresses strong
buttresses.
The Our Ladies' statue (a ceSedes
Sapientiae) has been dated to 1095 using the Carbon-14 method (which means this
is about the year when the wood was cut off the tree). The black wooden statue has
been painted at the end of the 19th century.
Further, we find an interesting pulpit,
mausoleum, a monstrance in the
choir and a nice organ.
