Saint Patroklidom (Sant Patroklidom) Soest / Germany description:Even though Soest never became a bisdom, it was the second city in the area of Köln.
The church history started with the Kölish artsbishop Brun. He was king Heinrich
I's son and Otto I's brother. As diplomatic present, the French court in Troyes gave
him the bones of the holy Patroclus. This he brought after a few years in Köln to
Soest on December 9th 962. In his testament, he ordered that in Soest a convent had
to be built.
The to this convent linked collegial church was
devoted on July 8th, 1166. During several centuries, the convent would be the most
powerful in Westfalen.
It's a Chatholic church.
Building
The building in green sandstone has an impressive
western block. The Romanseque
western tower (also called the 'Tower of Westfalen') is
according to some people one of the most impressive buildings of it's time and area.
The city owned the tower till the begin of the 19th century, and stored weapons
inside it. Romanesque elements of the western block are with the thick walls
doubtless the windows with round arches, the
windows with dividing columns...During night, the building is
nicely illuminated.
History
The first church must have been ready around 1000. During the first half of the
11th century, the western gqble hqd to be rebuilt after a fire.
In 1075, knight Walther, rother of the artsbisschop of Köln, was burried in the
crypt .
During later centuries (11th, 12th, 13th) several imporant changes would be done.
In 1817 the crypt was destroyed. But much worse, in 1944 and 1945 the second world
war would bring a lot a damage and destruction. After the war, rebuilding was done
quickly.
Inside
In the high altar one finds the
reliquary from 1871 housing the bones of the holy Patroclus.
It's previous reliquary from the begin of the 14th century was sold in 1841 to a
msueum in Berlin, where it got lost in 1945 when the bunker in which is was stored
burned.
A statue representing Patroclus stands on a
pilar on the west side under the
organ. Patroclus was beheaded in 275 because he refused to
