Our Lady in Height church (Pfarrkirche St.Maria zur Höhe) Soest / Germany description:This Our Lady in Height church (Pfarrkirche St.Maria zur Höhe) is style
wise a mixture of Romanesque and Gothic elements. It's
construction started around 1180. But before that, there was already a Romanesque
church here, and mainly the square choir carries remainders of that.
overblijfselen bevat. You see a mixture of pointed arches
and rounded arches. F.e. see the lancet
window above the passage under semi-circular arch. In the
stone above one sees a trilobate.
The tympanum with a crucifix with the Moon and the Sun is
a typical Romanesque element. In it, the Moon represents the Old Testament and the
Sun the New Testament. As other elements in the tympanum we see Jesus on a three-
aisled altar with Joseph carrying a Judish hat. On the right
there are 3 women at the Sarcofagues from which Jesus disappeared. Under the tympanum
however there is the year 1671. In this year the tower
collapsed and was rebuilt.
Above the saving niches between the
buttresses in the still thick walls there are
arched corbel courses.
Inside, we point to the unique 12th century triumph cross
on a disk. This is quite unique in Europe (in Sweden there would be similar but those
are more recent). originally, there was a Christ nailed on, of which the nail traces
are still visible. Since the end of the Middle Ages, this cross hangs in the south
aisle.
The central aisle still holds Middle Age ceiling paintings from
1230-1240. Those are Byzantine from inspiration, a result of the Crusades.
The organ-case is Baroque and
dates from 1679. The organ it self is recent: made in
1969 by Paul Ott.
Inside one also finds an impressive collection of
tombstones.
