Saint Nicolas' Monastery or 'Synaxis of the 12 Apostelen Barsana / Romania description:

This monastery was first mentionned on june 21, 1390, in a document about a road crossing between the road to the town Barsana with the road to the monastery. At that moment, this may have been a quite new monastery. There was a monastery on the other side of the Iza-river in the forest, which probably was relocated to the current site during the 2nd half of the 14th century.

During the 16th century, the monastery belonged to the Dragoses. It then was one f their monasteries, along with the more famous one of Peri.

In 1738, it was here that the last orthodox bishop Stefanka Gravil stayed. In 1740, the Romanian-Orthoxe episcopate was abloshed. Howoever, the monks would keep to their original faith until 1791.

On July 12th 1791 (period of the French Revolution) the properties and belongings were confiscated by the Austrian government, and the area was given to the Greec- Catholics from Cernoc (Munkaci). The last mnks left, and the wooden church was broken off and moved to the village.

In 1993, the area was baptised by Iustinian Chira (bishop of Maramures and Satmar) - strengthened by the prayers from the origin monastery times - to found a ne monastery. The monastery was mainly built in wood - in a style respecting the local traditions. The architect is Dorel Cordoş.

We point to the high gate house, the new wooden church and wooden buildings, the open wooden spiral staircases and the open character of the whole.

The 12 apostles synthax monastery would be consacrated to Saint Nicolas.
