Peri Sapanta Monastery Sapanta / Romania description:The Peri monastery of Sapanta has the tallest wooding building in Romania:
the oak wooden Saint-Michael'schurch toren,
with it's fine high spire, reaches 78 m above the gound. The
cross it carries weighs 400 kg. This Saint-Michael's church also is the
tallest wooden church in the world.
The Peri monastery probably was the eldest in Maramures. With a short interruption,
the Peri monastery also was the headquarter of the Romanian-Orthodoxe church in
Maramures. The monastery was destroyed in 1703 during the anti-Habsburg mutiny of
Francis II Rakoczi. The new Peri Monastery was built at the end of the 20th century.
