Oberhaus Castle Passau / Germany description:The Oberhaus castle was the stronghold of the prince bishops. Their
principality was founded in 1217. In order to protect - but also to suuppress the
inobediant people from passau, the prince bishops started the construction of the
Oberhaus castle in 1219. The castle can thus be considered, amongst others like he
Count's castle in Ghent, as a suppression castle.
It must be admitted that this cas a very strong castle. During Middle Ages, it was
attacked several times (1250, 1298, 1367 en 1482), but each time it managed to
resist.
In 1802, times changed, as a consequence of the the Prince Bishop loosing his
earthly power due to Napoleon Bonaparte's reforms. Originally, Napoleon held the
castle as fort against the Austrian troups. Afterwards, it became a prison, first for
cifils, but quickly as military prison. It was a dreaded prison, known as 'Bastille
Bavaria'. This role ended in 1918.
In 1932, the city of Passau took over the castle, changing it into a
museum.
