Yeast Gate / Blue Gate / Anchor Gate Middelburg / Netherlands description:This gate house was probably built during the 16th century, after the heavy
city fire of 1492, and was the entrance to the abbey. The high
late Gothic indows contain tracery with
trilobates. The
slate roof is rithmed with dormers.
The names 'Gistpoort' (Yeastgate) or Ankerpoort pint to the brewery 'Den Anker' which
has been here. The name 'Blauwpoort' (Blue gate) points to the bluestone
in which the building was made.
The >King on his trone above the gate is William 2 (1228-1258), who often was in
Middelburg and was burried there in the Koorkerk. Under his rule, the abbey enlarged a
lot. The group of statues was made in 1950 by . prof. Oswald Wenckebach.
