Alexander Nevski Cathedral Sofia / Bulgaria description:The Alexander Nevski (or Nevsky) cathedral is the bulgare Orthodox cathedral.
It is built in neo bysantine style from 1882 to 1912 according to plans by Alexander Pomerantsev, with the help of Alexander Smirnov and Alexander Yakovlev. It is the second largest church in the Balcan, being able to hold 10.000 persons.
The golden central dome is 45 metres high. The bell tower is 53 metres high, and carries 23 tons on bells.
Alexander Nevski was a Russian prince.
The cathedral was erected to honor the Russian soldiers who died during the Russian-Ottoman war from 1877-1878, the freed the bulgarians from the ottoman suppression.
The crypt houses an important collection of iconq.
